Ministry Staff

St. Vincent's is served by many people, almost all of whom are volunteers.
From faithful people serving coffee after church to others patiently
teaching Sunday School week after week, ministry is offered and needs sought
to be met.

But there are a few who have been called to a particular kind of ministry in
the Chaplaincy, which allows them the opportunity to do the work of the
Church in a special kind of way:

Fr. Haynes Q. Hubbard: Team Rector and Senior Chaplain, with Responsibility
for the whole of the Algarve, with particular responsibility for the Western
Section. Based in Praia da Luz, Fr. Haynes has administrative oversight of
the Chaplaincy for St. Vincent's, but works with the other
Chaplain Fr. Bob Bates and the Readers to ensure that ministry is offered throughout the Algarve for anyone
who desires to participate.

Father Haynes Hubbard

Born in Norfolk England and educated at University of Kings College,
Halifax, Nova Scotia then later at Wycliffe College, University of Toronto,
Fr. Haynes was ordained into the Diocese of Niagara and prior to accepting
his appointment in the Algarve he was Rector of the parish of Dunnville,
near Niagara Falls, Ontario. Outside of his work as a Parish Priest he
enjoys travel and, together with his wife Susan, who speaks Portuguese and
Spanish, has led various humanitarian and Christian missions in Central and
South America. Fr. Haynes and Susan have three children: Sebastian,
Gabriella and Caspian.

Over the past two years Praia da Luz has been much in the news because of the
tragic events surrounding the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Because Fr.
Haynes and his family arrived just after that happened, they have somewhat
been caught up in it, and allowed themselves to try and reach out to those
affected by that event, particularly the McCanns themselves.

For some sense of that story, you can see this clip:

Father Bob Bates

"Our new Chaplain Fr Bob Bates arrived with us at the end of May from the Peterborough Diocese in central England, where he has been ministering within five rural parishes, and living at Easton on the Hill, close to Stamford. Prior to that Fr Bob was based in central Peterborough, at St Mary´s Church - a parish of some 15,000 souls in an Urban Priority Area, which included a mosque and an encampment of "travellers", plus a great number of deprived people.

He has moved into the Chaplaincy House at Boliqueime along with his wife, Diane, and they will be joined in early July by Amos the black Labrador and Alfie the Jack Russell terrier. Diane has just finished her work as Admissions Secretary at Oundle School, a large Independent School in Northamptonshire that some of you may know. She is looking forward to working with and supporting Fr Bob, but also in exploring with God, her own calling.

Their son Tom is 25 and nearing the end of a post-graduate course in opera, in Cardiff where he lives in the family house with two other music students. Tom is a counter-tenor, specializing in opera and oratorio work as well as singing in Llandaff Cathedral choir. Fr Bob is sure that Tom will be a frequent visitor, and that we will hear him sing from time to time.

Until recently, Fr Bob practiced as a Chartered Surveyor, dividing his time between that work and his ministry. He stresses though that his ambition has always been to have his "own people" and he is looking forward to his ministry in the Algarve alongside Fr Haynes, and as Chaplain to the Central and Eastern Congregations.
