Father Reid talks about daily prayer and preparing a devotional space at home

Dear Friends

It looks like we're all going to be practicing our religion from home for some time to come. All of us should be diligent in daily prayer. All of us are going to have more or less success at it: so do remember to be merciful to yourselves!

We'll necessarily be deprived of our normal community and our usual sacred spaces. Setting aside a space in your home for devotion will help you be more regular in prayer. That might be as simple as a prayer or a Bible on the corner of your dining table. The addition of a cross and a candle can offer focus and a way of marking the time you set aside. A cloth keeps candle wax off the table (everything we do in liturgy should have a practical as well as a theological purpose).

Here's a way of thinking "wholistically" about what space you might set aside:

And here are some photographs of home altars that people sent the author in response. I think some of these may be too "busy" - clutter is liable to be a distraction; but everyone has their own approach, so do what seems helpful to your meditations:

Prayer is the most important element of the work we have to do as Christians in this time, dear ones. A good outline for intercessory prayer is found at page 214 of Common Worship. "The prayers usually include these concerns and may follow this sequence: The Church of Christ; Creation, human society, The Sovereign and those in authority; The local community; Those who suffer; The communion of saints."

Blessings to all. Care for one another. Keep in touch. Pray for the Church and for the world.

Father Reid
